Why Mum's To Be Need A Massage

Ah, pregnancy. It’s such a wonderful time…isn’t it? For many women, pregnancy can be completely blissful. Equally, it can be a time of worry, extreme tiredness, sleepless nights, aching, and twinging.

Although this is all very common and normal, isn’t doesn’t mean we need to grin and bear it. Having a pregnancy massage after the first trimester is an amazing, natural way to alleviate those issues.

Eases Pain

Sciatica, back pain, hip pain (to name a few) are common complaints when you’re expecting. If you are suffering from these, a massage can offer you relief. Massage therapy reduces pain by relaxing the muscles, tendons, and joints.

Improves Mood

Giving yourself dedicated time to completely relax with a prenatal massage can make you feel amazing and alleviate stress. The reason why massage makes you feel like this is because it promotes the release of serotonin and increases the production of oxytocin. To add to this, massage has also been shown to reduce stress hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline.

Hydrates Skin

Hormone changes during pregnancy can often cause dry skin. Massage enables your skin to better absorb the moisture and nourishment from the massage oils. This can be particularly helpful when you have lost the ability to reach your own legs and feet easily later on in your pregnancy (as I did).

Connection with your Baby

With 45 to 90 minutes of pure relaxation, it’s a perfect time to be present and connect with your baby without having to think about anything else. You can allow yourself to switch off from all other interruptions and be completely taken care of.

Relieves Insomnia

You’re tired all day long and yet when it comes to going to bed at night, you find you can’t sleep. This can be for many reasons, from doing 20 trips to the bathroom, the discomfort of sleeping with your ever-growing bump to heartburn and anxiety. As mentioned earlier, massage has been shown to help with mood, relax the muscles and ease pain, which in turn can help you get a better night’s sleep.

Reduces Swelling

You may experience swelling in your pregnancy, particularly in the feet and ankles. Massage can help reduce swelling by improving lymphatic circulation which can give you some much-needed relief from the discomfort of swelling.

There are so many reasons why massage is beneficial for mums-to-be. Ask for massage vouchers at your baby shower or as your maternity leave gift from your colleagues. This way, you see the benefits of regular massage.

As with most things when you are expecting a baby, please check with your GP or Midwife before having a prenatal massage that it is safe for you to do so.
